4th Class Cartography Module

22nd Sep 2025

This week, Mr. Wilson’s 4th Class took part in an exciting Geography lesson on cartography. The children began by learning about the different symbols used in mapping and how these help us to read and understand maps more clearly.

We then explored a historical map viewer, which allowed us to layer different maps of Ireland from the past. The class were fascinated to see how towns, villages, and local landmarks have changed over time, while some places have stayed much the same. This activity helped the children appreciate how maps are not just tools for navigation, but also windows into history.

To finish, we used Logainm.ie, Ireland’s official database of placenames. The children had great fun investigating the origins of local placenames and discovering the Irish language roots behind many familiar locations. This gave the class a deeper understanding of the connections between language, history, and geography in shaping the landscape around us.

The lesson sparked lots of curiosity and discussion, with many pupils eager to continue exploring maps and placenames at home!

We will use this knowledge and experience when we make fantasy maps, and will use these created worlds to base a narrative story in! Stay tuned!!
