4th Class Coding Microbits!

17th Apr 2026

๐Ÿš€ Mr Wilson’s 4th Class Step into the World of Coding with Micro:bits!

There was a real buzz of excitement in Mr Wilson’s 4th Class recently as the girls took their coding skills to the next level—moving from screen-based programming to working with real devices: Micro:bits!

๐Ÿ’ก From Coders to Creators

We began by building a strong foundation in computational thinking—learning how to break problems into smaller steps, spot patterns, and design clear instructions. Using block coding, the class quickly became confident programmers, able to predict, test, and fix their own code like real developers!

๐Ÿ”Œ Bringing Code to Life

The next big step was transferring our programs onto Micro:bits. This meant learning how to:

  • Download code from the computer to a physical device

  • Test it in real life

  • Debug and improve it when things didn’t work the first time

Seeing their code come to life in their hands was a huge moment—and one the class won’t forget!

๐Ÿ’ป What Did We Learn?

The girls explored some impressive programming concepts, including:

โœจ Repeatable Actions (Loops)

Creating scrolling text across the Micro:bit lights—just like a mini billboard!

๐Ÿ”„ Resetting and Controlling Programs

Understanding how to start, stop, and reset their creations.

๐ŸŽฎ Button Inputs with Multiple Actions

Programming buttons to perform different tasks—showing great understanding of control and logic.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Our Big Challenge: Build a Pedometer!

To finish, we set ourselves a challenge:

Could we turn our Micro:bits into step counters?

This was no easy task! It required:

  • Using detection conditions to recognise movement

  • Creating and updating variables to count steps

  • Careful thinking, testing, and problem-solving

And the result?

Every single student succeeded! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ŸŒŸ Learning for the Future

This work is a fantastic example of the Redeveloped Primary Curriculum in action, where children:

  • Take ownership of their learning

  • Develop creativity and problem-solving skills

  • Engage in meaningful, hands-on experiences

  • Build real digital skills for the future

Mr Wilson’s 4th Class showed incredible teamwork, resilience, and enthusiasm throughout this unit. They didn’t just learn how to code—they became confident digital creators.

Who knows… we might have some future engineers and programmers in our classroom yet! ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ’ป
