4th Class Conkers
Mr. Wilson’s 4th Class began their day with an autumn walk to Beaumont Park, where they explored the grounds in search of conkers. The children enjoyed gathering horse chestnuts, which they later brought back to school for a hands-on learning activity.
As part of their literacy work, the class focused on procedural writing, carefully sequencing and recording the steps involved in playing the traditional game of conkers. Mr. Wilson assisted by preparing the conkers, making holes and securing strings so that each pupil could create their own.
In the school yard, the children had the opportunity to put their writing into action by playing the game together. After each attempt, pupils reflected on their technique, considering what worked well and what could be improved. By making small adjustments and refining their approach, the class noticed a clear improvement in their accuracy and confidence.
It was a wonderful combination of outdoor exploration, skill development, and literacy in action — and a very enjoyable way to spend a sunny autumn morning.
