4th Class STEM Challenge

1st Sep 2025

This week, Mr. Wilson’s 4th Class took on the role of architects and engineers for the City of Cork. Their task? To design and build a brand-new skyscraper that would not only reach for the skies but also be strong enough to stand the test of time.

The challenge was simple on paper but tricky in practice: make the tallest tower possible, without it collapsing. Using only LEGO, the girls set to work. Some teams went for height straight away, creating towers that soared impressively but looked a little wobbly. Others focused on sturdiness, sacrificing height for solid, reliable designs.

Very quickly, we discovered how much patience and careful planning goes into real construction. Building a stable tower took far more time and thought than we expected!

To put the towers to the ultimate test, Mr. Wilson brought out 5 heavy Bua na Cainte books and dropped them from a moderate height on top of each structure. To everyone’s surprise – and relief – every single tower stood strong under the pressure.

It was a brilliant exercise in problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Best of all, the girls left with a new appreciation for the work of architects and engineers who build the real towers we see in cities today.
