Coding in Mr Wilson's 4th Class
Mr. Wilson’s 4th Class have been making fantastic progress on their coding journey over the past few weeks. We began by exploring Bee Bots, using them to practise the core ideas of computational thinking – sequencing, logical steps, problem-solving, and debugging. The girls loved experimenting with commands and watching their Bee Bots carry out (or hilariously mis-carry out!) their programmed actions. This hands-on start helped everyone understand how instructions must be clear, ordered, and precise.
From there, we moved on to block coding, the foundation of all future programming. Using child-friendly software, the girls created their very own playable video games. They learned how to design characters, set rules, and use blocks of code to control movement, scoring, backgrounds, and sound. Best of all, they quickly discovered how changing certain parameters could make a game easier, harder, faster, or even more colourful and exciting. The creativity and problem-solving on display were incredible!
Why This Matters
This coding work develops a wide range of valuable skills:
-
Logical thinking – breaking tasks into small, manageable steps.
-
Creativity and design – building characters, stories, and game worlds.
-
Resilience – learning that mistakes are part of the process and that debugging is where real problem-solving happens.
-
Collaboration – sharing ideas, testing each other’s games, and giving feedback.
-
Digital literacy – understanding how technology works, not just how to use it.
The girls have shown wonderful enthusiasm and confidence throughout these lessons. Their ability to adapt, experiment, and improve their own games shows just how capable they are as young digital creators.
We’re very proud of their progress and excited to see where their coding journey will take them next!
