Data Collectors in 4th Class

23rd Sep 2025

Mr. Wilson’s 4th Class have begun their new chapter on Data Collection in maths. And what better way to learn than through active learning!

We brought our maths lesson outdoors to survey the parked cars nearby. Each group worked together to tally the colours they spotted. Of course, this led to some brilliant debates — was that one grey-blue or blue-grey? Was the shiny car silver, white, or just very clean? In the end, we managed to agree (mostly!) and got our tallies down on paper.

Back in the classroom, we represented our findings using bar charts. We also learned why using a scale is important, as a one-to-one correspondence would have made for some very long graphs!

Finally, we reviewed our charts and discussed which car colours were the most common. The children had great fun combining observation, teamwork, and maths, and discovered how data can help us make sense of the world around us.
