Homemade terrariums in 4th Class

16th Jan 2026

Mr Wilson’s 4th class have been busy combining their learning in Geography and Science, exploring the topics of rocks and soil and living things in a hands-on and exciting way.

Using glass jars, the girls investigated what is needed for life and ecology to exist. Instead of just reading about it, they became real scientists by building their own mini ecosystems and observing how different parts of nature work together.

🪨 What’s in Soil?

The class learned that soil isn’t just dirt — it’s made up of lots of important parts:

  • Small rocks and stones for strength

  • Soil and sand to hold water

  • Dead leaves and plants which break down to feed new life

We talked about how soil forms over a very long time and why different soils are better for different plants.

🌿 Conditions for Life

To help living things survive, the girls learned that plants and small creatures need:

  • Water 💧

  • Air 🌬️

  • Light ☀️

  • Nutrients from soil

By carefully layering their jars, the class could clearly see how each part plays an important role in keeping an ecosystem healthy.

🐜 Living Things All Around Us

Using Beaumont Park, right on our doorstep, the girls explored:

  • Plants, grass, moss and leaves

  • Small insects and mini-habitats

  • How living things depend on each other

This helped them understand that ecosystems aren’t just in far-away rainforests. They exist right outside our school.

🌍 Learning from Our Local Environment

By bringing learning outdoors, the girls could:

  • Connect classroom learning to the real world

  • See geography and science working together

  • Develop curiosity about the environment around them

Beaumont Park proved to be the perfect outdoor classroom, helping the girls understand how rocks, soil and living things are all connected.
